Rayman Legends had a fun and fresh trailer for E3 featuring plenty of visual FX. Toufik Mekbel, a France based Visual effects designer, worked on that trailer and provided some breakdowns of his FX work.

3D Studio Max was used to create the effects, utilising several plugins. The frog slobber was created with Frost and Cloth, Pflow was used for the critter horder, sparks & stardust, and also used with Fumefx to create the smoke trails.

There is an interview on CG Record with Piotr Jaworowski the Executive Creative Director at Warsaw based agency, Ars Thanea, where he details how two giant illustrations were prepared for the world premier of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Commissioned by Ubisoft, for a promotional event featuring skyscrapers covered with gigantic the printouts, more than a dozen people worked on the project for about two months.

We started with the sketch Ubisoft had sent us, and expanded it using our creativity … then it was the standard process: we made a composition, 3D and corrections. But it was the size, and the amount elements that proved to be the hardest part to work on. Both scenes are very complicated composition-wise. There is an immense number of details in this illustration. We modelled them all in 3D: elements of the ship, ropes, human figures. Flags and masts are fabric simulations.

GamesHQMedia has posted a six-minute gameplay video of Watch Dogs, the Ubisoft action game that utilises a smart, in-game user interface to manipulate the near-future Chicago environment. It’s fascinating to see the GUI so deeply integrated into the 3D environment.

In Watch Dogs, players will assume the role of Aiden Pearce, a new type of vigilante who, with the help of his smartphone, will use his ability to hack into Chicago’s central operating system (ctOS) and control almost every element of the city. Aiden will be able to tap into the city’s omnipresent security cameras, download personal information to locate a target, control systems such as traffic lights or public transportation to stop a chase, and more. The city of Chicago is now the ultimate weapon.
